殊途同歸 Different Paths, The Same End.
Description
“Different paths, the same ends” is a collaboration, installation art project that explores the far-reaching effects of China's zero-covid policy. This policy significantly impacted citizens' lives. First, it exposes positive cases' travel histories to the public in government reports through local news, which raises a concern about individuals' privacy. Then, it requires them to abide by mandatory quarantine requirements. This has disrupted their daily routines and ability to engage in activities with family and friends.
To illustrate this, based on all the reports, my work partner and I researched and created maps for eight cities, labeled with locations that have been mentioned. We then put each map under a magnifying glass to simulate how people look through one's life on the internet and judge others' daily life. To further explore the effects of mandatory quarantine, we recreated a series of fictional stories based on the travel history, to reimagine how life was before and how it all ended in the same way: "I am going to be quarantined." The stories are written in Chinese and translated into English. Both texts are available online, and the English version is available in the books.
